Mt Rose is a super fun locals mountain, and is uniquely situated up high and on the Eastern Side of the Lake Tahoe Basin. This benefits Mt Rose with drier, lighter and deeper snowfall compared to many resorts in the region. There once was an era where Mt Rose was broken out into 2 separate resorts – Mt Rose / Slide Mountain and is very well served to be combined.
There are some very steep and extreme chutes to entertain expert skiers, open bowl and tree cut groomers for advanced and intermediate skiers, and segregated learn to ski area for beginners. This is quite a robust mountain for a smaller locals focused resort.
If you yern for Utah like powder and happen to be skiing in the Tahoe area… take a few powder days at Mt Rose to scratch that itch. Like Kirkwood the base elevation is quite high and even higher here starting at 8,200 ft – soaring to 10,000 at the summit. Being positioned on the East Slope of the Sierra’s storm systems tend to be colder and drier as they hit this peak affording some of the best snow quality in all of Tahoe.
Accommodations are plentiful but not at the resort. The best places to stay are in Reno or Incline Village. This is very much a bonus for those in search of great nightlife as both Reno and Incline offer gambling, all night clubs, and a wide selection of dining options.
